Giving Hearts Day 2025: Support the Horses of the Medora Musical!

Support the Horses of the Medora Musical this Giving Hearts Day!

When Harold and Sheila Schafer started the Medora Musical 60 years ago, they made one thing clear: The Medora Musical should have live horses. 60 years later, we still do!

This year, for Giving Hearts Day, we’ve decided to spotlight horses. When you give to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation on February 13, you help feed, train, and shelter our current horses—and support the purchase of new ones!

If you are a horse lover, you know how much hard work and time goes into the care of horses. The Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation works hard to provide for our horses year-round. Not only do our horses receive some of the best care, but they also have some of the best people in the state doing the “hard work and work worth doing,” as Teddy Roosevelt would say.

One of those individuals, Stables Manager Kiersten Carlisle, was grateful for the foundation’s decision to allocate this year’s Giving Hearts Day to the horses.

“The Medora Musical tells a story that brings Western America back to life in the outdoor setting, and the horses are the heartbeat. Each year 15-20 Stables horses return or are trained to perform nightly in the Medora Musical. When the hand falls and the cue is given, the horses know. I often say when training my wranglers to perform, “Just sit there, he will take care of you.” And they do. These are no ordinary horses, and they have no simplistic job. During the day he will quietly pack your 8-year-old daughter to one of the best overlook views in Medora, and at night he will listen for the same little girl to scream “HUGO!” Carlisle explained the meaningful work that the horses complete for our guests.

Our horses do some wonderful work in Medora, providing positive life-changing experiences for many of our visitors, whether it is on a trail ride or seeing them at the Medora Musical. This Giving Hearts Day, please be a part of the charge to keep these horses’ heartbeats and hoofbeats going in Medora!  To give to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation this Giving Hearts Day, please follow the link below.
